Remember your first ride on a Bicycle – Little confused, little frightened but still
excited to ride…..I don’t think there is any book that teaches how to ride a bicycle – we
learn it by riding, getting experiences of felling off and trying again…….
As we observe the world around, most of the life skills are achieved by doing.
Every mother and some fathers remember the first experience of making Roti in
different shapes or we remember the checklists followed during the first experience of
travelling by an Airplane……In each case, we learnt by Doing. The experience of Learning
by Doing makes an impact that we usually don’t forget. In ancient tribes, the Tacit
knowledge was carried to next generation by teaching them practically.
In Kindergarten, young child learns by exploring the world around them as he
plays with the blocks of different shapes, colors, makes different models using clay and
sings and dances to a song……child enjoys his learning during kindergarten …..But as he
grows older, the method of Learning changes, it becomes more of reading, listening or
watching teacher but lesser doing it himself. Moreover, he is accessed during
examinations by writing answers to specified questions. This forces a child to lack
interest in the subject and in the overall learning process.
.As described by Prof. Mitchel Resnick from MIT Media Lab in his book “Lifelong
Kindergarten”, child transforms into a Creative Thinker and a Lifelong Learner if he is
allowed to Explore and Learn by himself.
Learning by Doing encourages a child to think out of box to create on his own as
Learning is kindling of Flame; not the filling of vessels.
As a parent , it’s our duty to give Exposure and create Opportunity for a child to Learn !!!
